Welcome to Life in Amed
We are located in the Fishing Village of Lean, each morning before sunrise the local fisherman leave on their Jukung boats to catch mackerel in the Lombok Straights, one of the deepest seas in the world. The fisherman usually return around 7.30 am in the morning, which is lovely to watch from the beach. It is a family affair so the women and children gather to collect the fish and take it to the road, where it is then picked up to be taken to the city for export.
From the beach in front of “Life in Amed” it is easy to snorkel and see many colourful fish and large coral formations. You can see Angelfish, Bannerfish, Giant Wrasse and Orange-lined Triggerfish. There are many places to snorkel in Amed, take a trip on a jukung boat to the Japanese Shipwreck, Jemeluk, a fishing trip or to watch the sunset. It is easy to snorkel from the most of the local beaches and for the learning or experienced diver there are many beautiful dives in the area, the most famous at Tulamben, the SS Liberty an American Warship sunk by the Japanese in 1942. If you are interested in taking a diving course we suggest ECO DIVE (www.ecodivebali.com).
Our hotel is on flat land and directly beach front, a mixture of black and white sand, it is lovely to sunbathe between the traditional Jukung boats, most of the time you will be the only person on our beach and the local children may come to play and collect shells for you. For snorkelling keep in mind the tides change and are stronger at Full Moon and Dark Moons, visibility may not be as good, the beach width also changes with the seasons and is shorter in the winter months and widest in the summer months, which is also the coolest time to come to Bali. A few meters to the left, past the Temple is a sandy stretch, great for swimming and floating in the ocean.
If you enjoy walking in the morning or late afternoon, take a left from the hotel and you'll see village life and beautiful views for the cliffs. Hikers can go up and over the mountain with a local guide. On the motorbike it is easy to go over the mountain to Bangli Village where they have five Holy springs with different tasting water, rice terraces and tapioca drying on the rocks or just cruise the stunning coastline towards Seraya. There are many places of interest to visit while you stay in Amed, the local production of the sea salt, Tirtagangga & Ujung Waterpalaces, Amlapura market, the Bali Aga Village of Tenganan, the White Dragon Temple of Lempuyang and Besakih, the Mother Temple of Bali. You may like to just relax and enjoy our Body care services, a refreshing Back massage or facial treatment. Also the local women provide a Traditional Massage by request.
Life in Amed is in the heart of a vibrant Fishing Village where daily life has not changed in decades, the people are very friendly and welcoming to their homes and daily lives. It is traditional for the village to come together for the many ceremonies that occur, whether a three month baby blessing, marriage, cremation or a blessing of their boat or Temple. When this occurs there will be a calling of all the men to come and kill the pigs for the celebration and a little later the women gather to make the offerings, this can be noisy if close to the hotel, so we supply ear plugs, this is not a daily occurrence just occasionally, and very interesting for the guest to witness and join the celebration. This is something that is the heart of the Balinese lifestyle and culture, and happens all over Bali and why it is such a unique place to visit, we cannot change this so please enjoy with us.
